Making a Positive Impact

Improving Quality Of Life For Colombian Coffee Farmers

project image SAP joined forces with the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC) and the Manuel Mejía Foundation to improve the quality of life for Colombian farmers. The three groups came together to provide coffee farmers with the technology and training they need to develop more sustainable business practices.

SAP donated technical training to more than 500 coffee growers, teaching them how to effectively use mobile tablets and computers. They will also learn how to use the “coffee portal,” which runs on SAP technology. Using the new coffee portal on their mobile devices or computers, farmers and their families can obtain relevant information such as coffee market news, geographical farm information, coffee purchasing conditions, incentives and support programs.

“Working with SAP is essential to bringing technology to rural areas of the country. Helping farmers become familiar with tools like the coffee portal and access to the portal, gives them access to important business information that helps shape their market activities.”

SAP Launches SAP Rural Sourcing Management Solution to Support and Grow Smallholder Farmers in Developing Countries

project image 500 million smallholder farmers produce nearly 80% of all food consumed in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Agriculture is the foremost employer in sub-Saharan Africa, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the total labour force. However, smallholder farmers often lack access to technology and financial services, limiting their ability to grow their business and increase productivity and output.

A partnership was formed in 2009 between SAP and the German GIZ. This partnership started with the African Cashew Initiative which aimed to improve farmer incomes and livelihoods, advance African cashew nut quality and production, increase local processing capacity and improve market linkages along the value chain.

In 2013, the partnership joined forces with the Uganda Coffee Farmers Alliance (UCFA) - an alliance of 54,000 small farmers – to launch a development partnership with the goal to increase transparency in the coffee value chain. SAP developed a solution including a mobile application to capture data from farmers, purchases, logistics and payments supporting a sustainable and traceable procurement process. Smallholder farmers benefit from electronic data and their payment history opening the doors to banks’ financial services, helping to improve their livelihoods.

In 2017, SAP formally released the solution SAP Rural Sourcing Management, a mobile solution that links farmers digitally to the agriculture value chain through a suite of mobile business applications, supporting inclusive agricultural chains.

"You cannot do this unless you have employees with passion in their hearts, because it is a lot of hard work. But it’s clearly been worth the effort, because in 2016 we had a positive impact on 1000 lives.”

Improving the Lives of Refugees

project image There are millions of refugees of all ages stuck in camps throughout war zones and hosting countries. Despite their wide range of skills, most of these people have no choice but to idle away the day. For children the biggest issue is lack of education beyond the elementary level. SAP Code Weeks in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America give refugees and other underprivileged people a chance to contribute to the economy. SAP reached 10,200 youth in the Middle East: 43% girls and 2,439 teachers were trained by SAP experts and volunteers. In Africa, 426,758 youth were introduced to coding: 46% girls; 5607 teachers trained.

“Technology is the contemporary language. I see the children as the future of the Arabic world. This generation of kids between 9 and 18 will rebuild Syria”

Autism At Work

Business Without Bias

project image project image SAP committed to have 1% of its total workforce on the autistic spectrum by 2020. in May 2013, SAP launched its Autism at Work program, which is aimed at recruiting and hiring adults on the autism spectrum. The program is based on the premise that technology companies need to fill STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) jobs, and individuals on the autism spectrum not only often have those skills, but are in desperate need of employment. Autism at Work is one of the programs within SAP’s push to enable Business Beyond Bias.

“I was homeless for a number of years,” says Mark Jessen, a successful IT consultant and a valued team member based in SAP's Silicon Valley office. “I was surviving from day to day, struggling to get back to work, but not getting any traction. I knew I had good skills, but there were so many obstacles! Companies weren't willing to look at me, or take me seriously. Then I heard about SAP’s program.”
